“Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction” is usually translated as ‘stress management through mindfulness’ and is an eight-week course that was developed over 40 years ago by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University Hospital of Massachusetts (USA). It is the classic of the various mindfulness formats. The effectiveness of this program has now been very well researched and confirmed by numerous studies.
Three types of formal exercises form the core of the program:
-
traditional sitting meditation
-
gentle and mindful yoga exercises
-
Body scan, where the body is systematically “scanned” from the inside with benevolent attention
By practicing mindfulness, it is possible to perceive and distinguish your own thoughts, feelings and body sensations more clearly without getting lost in judgments, worries and fears. Automated patterns of behavior and movement can thus be consciously perceived and changed.
Possible positive effects can be
- better ability to concentrate
- an easier feeling of flow when making music
- less stress and anxiety
- more serenity
- fewer psychosomatic symptoms
- more joie de vivre
- more ability to relax
