IN MEMORY OF IRMGARD BONTINCK (4 JUNE 1941 – 1 NOVEMBER 2022)
Irmgard Bontinck was an outstanding personality in many respects. First as an assistant professor from the early 1970s, later as a full professor, she was one of the first music sociologists at the mdw, where she made major contributions to establishing the field of music sociology as an independent academic discipline. Through her international partnerships, she helped the “Viennese School” of music sociology gain great visibility. Following Kurt Blaukopf, Irmgard Bontinck led the Department of Music Sociology at the mdw until her retirement in 2007. From 2004 until 2007, she was mdw’s Vice Rector for Academic Affairs and the Advancement of Women. In 1999, she was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria, followed by the Grand Decoration of Honour in Silver for Services to the Republic of Austria in 2007.
We thank you for your unremitting efforts for our department.
