Afghan Music in Exile
On June 2nd 2023, the Structured Doctoral Programme “Music Matters” (sdp) and the Department of Folk Music Research and Ethnomusicology host an event on the current situation of Afghan music in exile. It is designed as a unique event creating a space for Afghan scholars, musicians and experts to speak on the topic from their perspectives. Equally, there will be room for exchange and interaction with the audience after each presentation. It will conclude with a concert by Afghan master musicians Ustad Ghulam Hussein and Ustad Latif Sharifi. We would like to invite you to join the lectures, the discussion and the concert and kindly request registration.

Peter Lell, who initiated this symposium, has been able to advance his research in this area in the last few months: In early February, he conducted field research in Lucerne and attended a lecture-concert at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) as well as a concert specifically for the Afghan community. During his time there, he actively participated in the preparations and rehearsals, engaging in numerous informal conversations. He attended the concerts and, at the end, even performed on stage for two pieces.
In late February he participated at the "Middle East and Central Asian Music Forum" at the SOAS University of London and he managed to meet and interview the renowned researcher on Afghan music, John Baily, and the Afghan musicologist Mirwaiss Sidiqi.
From April 13-16, he participated at the Annual Conference 2023 of the British Forum for Ethnomusicology (BFE), where he presented his research: “Mobilities and Immobilities – Views on Afghan Music” and engaged in discussions with international researchers.
