Wir haben wieder einige spannende Veranstaltungen und Neuigkeiten, über die wir Sie gerne informieren möchten. Zuallererst wollen wir darauf hinweisen, dass die Anmeldefrist für die Zulassungsprüfung des Masterstudiums Ethnomusikologie diesen Mittwoch den 15. Mai ist. Weiters erinnern wir Sie auch an das Jahreskonzert des Instituts, welches am Donnerstag den 16. Mai um 19:00 im Joseph-Haydn-Saal stattfinden wird. 

Lecture-Performance

Die afghanische Rubab in Bild und Klang. Eine Lecture-Performance

Dienstag, 21. Mai, 19:00, Weltmuseum Wien

Wir möchten Sie herzlich zu einer Lecture-Performance von unserem Lehrenden Peter Lell ins Weltmuseum einladen: „Die afghanische Rubab in Bild und Klang. Eine Lecture-Performance“. Die Veranstaltung findet im Rahmen des mdw-Festivals „KlangBildKlang“ statt und ist vom Institut für Volksmusikforschung und Ethnomusikologie mitorganisiert. 

Die afghanische Rubab gilt als Nationalinstrument des Landes und wird an diesem Abend durch Stationen der (Musik-)Geschichte Afghanistans führen. Materialität und Klang des Instruments werden dabei im Fokus stehen und in multimedialen Erkundungen sowie anhand von Instrumenten vor Ort beleuchtet werden. Die beiden Musiker Sobeir Bachtiarund Peter Lell werden mit musikalischen Performances einen Einblick in die afghanische Musiktradition geben – dies auch im Kontext der politischen Herrschaft unter den Taliban, die die Musik schon mehrmals fast zum Verstummen brachten, indem sie beispielsweise Instrumente systematisch zerstörten und Musiker*innen verfolgten. Die Lecture-Performance ist als interaktives Format gedacht, welches mit einem wissenschaftlich-künstlerischen Vortrag beginnt und in ein Workshopsetting mündet, das zum Dialog einlädt.

Anmeldung online ist notwendig (begrenzte Teilnehmer*innenanzahl). Für die Teilnahme wird ein gültiges Museumsticket benötigt. 

Um 18:00 findet ein Object Speed Dating mit afghanischen Instrumenten aus der Sammlung des Museums statt, dafür ist der Eintritt frei.

Music of the Great Steppe

Konzert mit dem Kasachischen Ensemble "Sazgen Sazy"

Wir laden Sie herzlich ein zu einem Konzert des folkloristisch-ethnografischen Ensembles "Sazgen Sazy" aus Kasachstan ein, welches am 27. Mai um 19:30 in Kooperation mit unserem Institut im Fanny Hensel-Saal stattfinden wird. 

Ursprünglich hieß das Ensemble "Sazgen Sazy" "Sazgen". Es war die Idee von Uzbekaly Zhanibekov, einem herausragenden Forscher, prominenter öffentlicher Führungsfigur, Historiker, Wissenschaftler und Ethnographen. Auf seine Initiative hin wurde 1981 das folkloristisch-ethnografische Ensemble "Sazgen Sazy" im Rahmen des nach Yukhlass benannten Republikanischen Museums für nationale kasachische Volksinstrumente gegründet. Ab 2003 änderte das "Sazgen"-Ensemble seinen Titel und heißt seitdem folkloristisch-ethnografisches Ensemble "Sazgen Sazy".

Haartanz der indigenen Gruppe Tao (Taiwan)

Ein Workshop von Si Pehbowen, Yung-Hsiang Shih, Mei-Yu Cheng, Kan-Tsai Hsieh, Chi Hsieh, Chun-Mei Hsieh, Ruei-Ci Hsieh

Dienstag, 28. Mai, 15:30, Franz-Liszt-Saal

Die Tao sind eine der 16 anerkannten indigenen Gruppe Taiwan. Sie leben auf der Orchideeninsel (蘭嶼), die Tao nennen ihre Insel ponso no tao, was Insel der Menschen bedeutet. Die bekannteste Zeremonie im Rahmen des Erntefests bei den Tao ist der Haartanz der Frauen. Dabei schwingen sie anmutig ihre langen Haare, um ihre Zuneigung für ihre Ehemänner und Familien zu zeigen. Früher durfte der Tanz nicht bei Tageslicht zu vollführen, daher fanden die Tänze oft am Strand im Mondschein statt. Heutzutage ist der Tanz jedoch Teil des Tagesprogramms des Erntefests. In diesem Workshop werden die eingeladenen Tao-Frauen uns zeigen, wie dieser Tanz aufgeführt werden.

Der Workshop wird in Deutsch und Englisch stattfinden und ist für Studierende aller Studienrichtungen offen. Um Anmeldung bis zum 26. Mai wird gebeten unter dlouhy-staber@mdw.ac.at

From historical and contemporary Research Perspectives" an der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien vom 7. bis 8. Oktober 2024.

Lecture-Performance

The Afghan Rubab in Image and Sound. A Lecture-Performance

Tuesday, May 21, 19:00, Weltmuseum Wien

We would like to invite you to a lecture-performance by our lecturer Peter Lell at the Weltmuseum: "The Afghan Rubab in Image and Sound. A lecture performance". The event is part of the mdw festival "KlangBildKlang" and is co-organized by the Department of Folk Music Research and Ethnomusicology. 

The Afghan rubab is considered the country's national instrument and on this evening it will take us through the various stages of Afghanistan's (musical) history. The focus will be on the materiality and sound of the instrument and will be illuminated in multimedia explorations and using instruments on site. The two musicians Sobeir Bachtiarand Peter Lell will give an insight into the Afghan musical tradition with musical performances – also in the context of political rule under the Taliban, who almost silenced music several times, for example by systematically destroying instruments and persecuting musicians. The lecture performance is conceived as an interactive format that begins with a scientific-artistic lecture and leads into a workshop setting that encourages a dialogue.

Online registration is neccessary (limited number of participants). To participate in the event, all guests need a valid museum ticket. 

At 18:00 there will be an Object Speed Dating with Afghan Instruments from the Collection of the Museum, with free admission.

Concert with the Kazakh Ensemble "Sazgen Sazy"

We cordially invite you to a concert of the folkloristic-ethnographic ensemble "Sazgen Sazy" from Kazakhstan, which will take place on May 27 at 19:30 in cooperation with our institute in the Fanny Hensel Hall. 

Initially the ‘Sazgen Sazy’ ensemble was called ‘Sazgen’. It was the brainchild of Uzbekaly Zhanibekov, outstanding researcher, prominent public leader, historian, scientist-ethnographer. In accordance with his initiative the folklore-ethnographic ensemble ‘Sazgen Sazy’ was founded in 1981 under the Republican Museum of Kazakh national folk instruments named after Yukhlass. Commencing 2003 the ‘Sazgen’ ensemble changed its title and ever since that time it was called the folklore-ethnographic ensemble ‘Sazgen Sazy’.

Hair Dance of the Indigenous Tao (Taiwan)

A Workshop with Si Pehbowen, Yung-Hsiang Shih, Mei-Yu Cheng, Kan-Tsai Hsieh, Chi Hsieh, Chun-Mei Hsieh, Ruei-Ci Hsieh

The Tao are one of the 16 recognized indigenous groups of Taiwan. They live on Orchid Island (蘭嶼), the Tao call their island ponso no tao, which means island of the people. The most famous ceremony during the Tao harvest festival is the women's hair dance. They gracefully swing their long hair to show their affection for their husbands and families. In the past, the dance was not allowed to be performed in daylight, so the dances often took place on the beach in the moonlight. Nowadays, however, the dance is part of the daily program of the harvest festival. In this workshop, the invited Tao women will show us how to perform this dance.

The workshop will be held in German and English and is open to students from all fields of study. Please register by May 26 at dlouhy-staber@mdw.ac.at
