AMMR Grantee 2024: Jelena Gligorijević
Nach dem letztjährigen Aufruf der MMRC-Anschubfinanzierung "Advancing Music and Minorities Research" (AMMR) freuen wir uns, Ihnen die ausgewählte AMMR grantee vorzustellen!
Die vielfältigen Forschungsinteressen von Musik- und Kulturwissenschaftlerin Jelena Gligorijević reichen von Max Cavaleras World-Metal-Projekten über queere Karaoke- und Live-Musik-Performances während der COVID-19-Krise bis hin zum Brexit in den britischen Popmusikdiskursen. Ihr Hauptinteresse und ihre Expertise gilt jedoch Fragen der Identität, Macht und Politik in der populären Musik des Balkans in den Regionen des ehemaligen Jugoslawiens, insbesondere in Serbien, wie z.B. in ihrer Dissertation "Contemporary Music Festivals as Micronational Spaces: Articulations of National Identity in Serbia's Exit and Guča Trumpet Festivals" (University of Turku, 2019) ausgeführt.
Jelena Gligorijević erhält einen AMMR grant vom MMRC für die Entwicklung des Forschungsprojekts mit dem Arbeitstitel "Minorities within Minorities? Identity and Power Play in Balkan Popular Music Practices of Multiply Marginalized Groups within Vienna’s Ex-Yugoslav Diaspora".
AMMR ist eine "Seed Money"-Initiative des MMRC, die darauf abzielt, talentierte Forscher*innen bei der Akquise von Fördermitteln für ihre Projektideen zu unterstützen und hochwertige Forschung zu Musik und Minderheiten am MMRC zu fördern.

Wir freuen uns, euch ankündigen zu können, dass die diesjährige MMRC Lecture am 14. Oktober im Joseph Haydn-Saal der mdw – Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst stattfinden wird! Und unseren Abonnent*innen können wir schon jetzt das Thema verraten: Musik und Klasse! Wie können wir in, durch und mit Musik und Sound über Klasse nachdenken? Wir haben zwei spannende Vortragende eingeladen, die in unterschiedlichen Kontexten arbeiten und Einblicke in ihre Forschung geben werden, sowie einen Musik-Act, der das Thema auf künstlerisch-aktivistische Weise aufgreift!

"Sounding Out Municipal Housing in Vienna: Ethnographic Insights into Music and Sound in the Anton-Figl-Hof"

Der Beitrag von Jasemin Anika Khaleli (ÖAW/PhA), kürzlich erschienen in Musicologica Austriaca: Journal for Austrian Music Studies, untersucht das Potenzial von Musik für das Verständnis von Nachbar*innenschaftsbeziehungen und die Schaffung von Räumen der Begegnung im Kontext des Wiener Gemeindebaus: Wie spiegelt sich die Vielfalt von Herkunft, Sprachen, Altersgruppen und Interessen in den musikalischen Vorlieben der Bewohner*innen wider? Welche Rolle spielen Klang und Musik im Alltag und in den Vorstellungen und Erzählungen der Bewohner*innen von städtischem Wohnraum? Und wie wirkt sich der öffentliche Musikkonsum auf die zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen zwischen sogenannten Alt- und Neumieter*innen aus, indem er sowohl Raum für Konflikte der Nicht-Zugehörigkeit als auch für inklusive Formen musikalischer Geselligkeit bietet?
Der Artikel stützt sich auf Erkenntnisse aus der Feldforschung im Rahmen des Forschungsprojekts "Klingender Gemeindebau", das von 2021-2022 als Kooperation zwischen dem MMRC, wohnpartner, Wiener Wohnen und dem Phonogrammarchiv ÖAW im Anton-Figl-Hof in Wien durchgeführt wurde.

"Sa tja patjivake, Ruža (Dir zu Ehren, Ruža). Lieder von Ruža Nikolić-Lakatos (1945-2022) live und digital aufbereitet"

In ihrem Beitrag im mdw Webmagazin geben Ursula Hemetek und Eva Leick Einblicke in das MMRC-Forschungsprojekt und die digitale Ausstellung Ružake gila über das musikalische Werk der Sängerin Ruža Nikolić-Lakatos, die im Kontext der Rom*nja-Emanzipationsbewegung in Österreich durch ihre Musik zu einer "Botschafterin der Roma-Kultur" wurde. Neben der digitalen Aufbereitung von Ružas musikalischem Nachlass fand im Rahmen des Konzertabends "Sa tja patjivake, Ruža – Dir zu Ehren, Ruža" am 3. Mai auch eine musikalische Auseinandersetzung mit ihren Liedern statt, die die beiden Autorinnen in ihrem Artikel Revue passieren lassen.

In this newsletter of the Music and Minorities Research Center (MMRC), we introduce you to this year's "Advancing Music and Minorities Research" (AMMR) grantee Jelena Gligorijević and congratulate our colleague Ioannis Christidis on the successful completion of his PhD project!
In addition, we can already give you first, exclusive insights into this year's MMRC Lecture, which will take place on October 14 at the mdw - University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna!

AMMR grantee 2024: Jelena Gligorijević
Following last year’s call for MMRC's "Advancing Music and Minorities Research" (AMMR) seed money initiative, we are pleased to introduce to you the selected AMMR grantee!
Jelena Gligorijević is an experienced scholar in the Cultural Study of Music with multiple research interests ranging from Max Cavalera’s World Metal projects, through to queer karaoke and live music performances during the COVID-19 crisis, to Brexit in Britain’s popular music discourses. Her primary field of expertise is, however, in issues of identity, power, and politics in Balkan popular music across the former Yugoslav region, notably Serbia, as exemplified by her doctoral dissertation Contemporary Music Festivals as Micronational Spaces: Articulations of National Identity in Serbia’s Exit and Guča Trumpet Festivals (University of Turku, 2019).
Jelena Gligorijević receives an AMMR seed money grant from MMRC to develop the research project provisionally titled: "Minorities within Minorities? Identity and Power Play in Balkan Popular Music Practices of Multiply Marginalized Groups within Vienna’s Ex-Yugoslav Diaspora".
AMMR is a "seed money" initiative by MMRC which aims at supporting talented researchers in acquiring funding for their project ideas and boosting high-quality research on music and minorities at MMRC.

Our warmest congratulations go to our colleague Dr. Ioannis Christidis, on the successful completion of his PhD project "Music in the experience of forced migration from Syria to the European Borderland"!
On June 4, Ioannis defended his doctoral thesis at the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts in front of a commitee consisting of the MMRC's director Ursula Hemetek, Svanibor Pettan (Professor in Ethnomusicology at the University of Ljubljana) and Nikolaus Urbanek (Professor of Musicology and Dean of Research Programmes, mdw) as well as friends, family and colleagues – with honours! We wish you the very best with your upcoming projects and are looking forward to our future collaborations.

We are happy to announce that this year’s MMRC Lecture will be happening on October 14, 2024, at Joseph Haydn Hall at the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts. And to our subscribers, we can already reveal the theme: Music and Class! How can we think about class in, through and with music and sound? We have invited two exciting speakers working in different contexts who will share insights into their research, and a music act that takes up the theme in an artistic and activist way!

"Sounding Out Municipal Housing in Vienna: Ethnographic Insights into Music and Sound in the Anton-Figl-Hof"

The article by Jasemin Anika Khaleli (ÖAW/PhA) examines the potential of music for understanding neighborhood relationships and creating spaces for encounter in the context of municipal housing in Vienna (Wiener Gemeindebau): How does the diversity of origin, languages, age groups, and interests resonate in the musical preferences expressed by the residents? What role do sound and music play in everyday life and in the ways in which municipal housing is imagined and narrated by its residents? And how does public music consumption affect interpersonal relationships between so-called longtime and new tenants in providing space for both conflicts of non-belonging and inclusive forms of musical sociability?
The article draws on insights gained through fieldwork in the context of the research project "Klingender Gemeindebau", which was conducted from 2021-2022 as a cooperation between MMRC, wohnpartner, Wiener Wohnen and the Phonogrammarchiv ÖAW at Anton-Figl-Hof in Vienna.

"Sa tja patjivake, Ruža (Dir zu Ehren, Ruža). Lieder von Ruža Nikolić-Lakatos (1945-2022) live und digital aufbereitet"

In their article in the mdw web magazine, Ursula Hemetek and Eva Leick provide insights into the MMRC's research project and digital exhibition Ružake gila about the musical work of the singer Ruža Nikolić-Lakatos, who became an "ambassador of Roma culture" through her music in the context of the Roma emancipation movement in Austria. In addition to the digital processing of Ruža's musical legacy, the two authors also review the concert evening "Sa tja patjivake, Ruža – In your honour, Ruža" on 3 May which was curated as a musical exploration of Ruža’s songs.
