mdw structured doctoral programme

Final News from sdp "Music Matters"

Looking back and into the future

The time has come for the last newsletter of mdw's first structured doctoral programme, which was completed at the end of September. Our first graduate, Isabel Frey, already took up her new position as Senior Artist at the Institute for Folk Music Research and Ethnomusicology in October, where she teaches both academic courses in ethnomusicology and artistic courses in Yiddish music. This position offers her the opportunity to turn her dissertation into a published book and to develop new postdoctoral research projects in the field of ethnomusicology. Peter Lell is now part of the “MMRC 2026+” project at the Music and Minorities Research Center (MMRC). The project focuses on advancing the strategic vision and international positioning of the MMRC beyond 2026. As part of this initiative, Peter is organizing a multi-day international conference at the mdw in spring 2026, bringing together researchers, minority communities, and the public to foster dialogue, networking, and knowledge exchange. Angelica Pinna is now active at the Department of Cultural Management and Gender Studies (IKM), where she offers scientific and administrative support for the Innovative Universities in Music and Arts in Europe (IN.TUNE) project. The alliance, co-funded by the European Union, aims to enhance the quality, performance and international competitiveness of arts education and research across Europe, addressing current challenges in the arts sectors and developing joint supportive tools in areas such as employability and entrepreneurship.

For those interested, a reflection on the completion of the programme has been published in the new mdw magazine - available in German and English in print and online.

Further recommended readings are a chapter written by Sophie Zehetmayer titled 'Versuch über Musik und Sprache' that has been published in the anthology "Worte ohne Lieder. Sprachästhetik und musikalisches Schreiben bei Adorno", edited by Wolfgang Fuhrmann, Gabriele Geml, Han-Gyeol Lie and Nikolaus Urbanek, and the published interview by Tianju Jiang at Dancecult, peer-reviewed, open-access e-journal for the study of electronic dance music culture. Tianyu will also be giving a lecture at the Dancecult conference in Berlin on January 24-25 next year.

Last but not least, we are very pleased to announce that there will be a follow-up sdp on the topic ‘Performing Matters’, the call for proposals has already been published. Once again, six doctoral students will get the opportunity to work together on the overarching topic. The positions are funded for four years, further information can be found here.

Finally, we wish everyone a peaceful end to the year, hopefully without too much stress, and leave you with our best wishes for the upcoming holidays.
