Johannes Weiss

Deputy Head of Department

Johannes Weiss is a singer, conductor, and harpsichordist, primarily (but not exclusively) dedicated to the music of the 17th and 18th centuries. In addition to maintaining international concert and opera engagements, he regularly works as a tenor soloist with Akadêmia (F) and the Lutherse Bach Ensemble (NL), gives masterclasses in chant and historical performance practice, e.g. at the »International Summer School of Early Music« in Valtice (CZ), and teaches as a Senior Lecturer for ensemble and historical interpretation at the mdw Department of Early Music in Vienna. Paralelly – together with his colleague Heidi Gröger – he developed several government-financed festivals like »Musikfest Eichstätt – Alte Musik neu entdecken« and »Spandau macht Alte Musik – Ein Festival für Berlin«.

Before turning more to solo singing, Johannes initially completed his studies in music pedagogy (secondary school) and historical instruments (harpsichord with Lars Ulrik Mortensen and Glen Wilson; Viola da Gamba with Jaap ter Linden). During his college years, he won several competitions on both instruments, including the Biagio-Marini-Wettbewerb in Neuburg/Donau, the Van-Wassenaer-Concours in The Hague, the chamber music prize of the Polytechnische Gesellschaft in Frankfurt am Main, and the Alte-Musik-Wettbewerb of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin.

Singing came more and more into focus at the same time, and Johannes received inspiration through his studies with Hedwig Fassbender; in masterclasses with Christoph Prégardien, Ernst Häfliger, Guillemette Laurens and Thomas Heyer; and as a member of the Atelier Lyrique of the Paris Opera. He has had solo roles at the Oper Frankfurt, the Freie Landestheater Bayern, the Hessische Staatstheater Wiesbaden, the Opéra La Monnaie in Brussels, the National Theater in Prague, the Opéra National de Paris, the Danzig Opera, the Opéra de Monte Carlo, and the Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg.

Through his work as teacher, artistic director, and conductor, Johannes Weiss goes beyond simply making music – he endeavors to form and shape the current musical landscape, driven by the goal of inspiring more people to feel passionate about music.
