We mourn a beloved friend and colleague who was a great artist and an enthusiastic teacher. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s6\">Wolfgang Gl\u00fcxam was born in Melk and first arrived at the mdw as a st<\/span><span class=\"s6\">udent in 1976, studying organ under Alfred Mitterhofer and Michael Radulescu, harpsichord under Isolde <\/span><span class=\"s6\">Ahlgrimm and <\/span><span class=\"s6\">Gordon Murray<\/span><span class=\"s6\">, and composition with Thomas Christian David. And in 1982, he went on to study harpsichord with Ton Koopman at the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s6\">Gl\u00fcxam first taught harpsichord at the mdw in 1985\u2014and from 1987 he taught here continuously for over 30 years, completing his habilitation 2004. Countless harpsichordists who studied with him tell of his encouraging, inspiring, patient, and <\/span><span class=\"s6\">undogmatic teaching from which one could learn so many things\u2014not just about music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s6\">Gl\u00fcxam performed internationally on the harpsichord and the organ, appearing both as a soloist <\/span><span class=\"s6\">and with a number of ensembles (including the Orchestra da Camera \u201cLorenzo Da Ponte\u201d, the Salzburger Barockensemble, Concentus Musicus Wien, the Wiener Akademie, and the Vienna RSO). He also maintained important artistic partnerships with figures including<\/span> <span class=\"s6\">Hiro Kurosaki, Patrick Ayrton, and Roberto Zarpellon. <\/span><span class=\"s6\">He won international compositions from his yout<\/span><span class=\"s6\">h onward, and alongside his teaching and performing activities, he was also a frequently requested juror.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s6\">For the Austrian harpsichord scene, Gl\u00fcxam\u2019s commercial recordings of wor<\/span><span class=\"s6\">ks by Froberger, Bach, Duphly, and Mozart (many of which were produced in collaboration with Bernhard Trebuch at the ORF) represented a major influence and enrichment. And quite generally, his doings as an artist and as an educator lent the harpsichord an <\/span><span class=\"s6\">entirely new degree of visibility within Austrian musical life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s6\">With Wolfgang Gl\u00fcxam\u2019s passing, we have lost a modest, honest, warm-hearted individual and a very special musician<\/span><span class=\"s6\">\u2014sensitive and powerful, gripping and lively\u2014who <\/span><span class=\"s6\">always<\/span><span class=\"s6\">had so much to <\/span><span class=\"s6\">say. And a further special memo<\/span><span class=\"s6\">ry is of how Wolfgang, 25 years ago in the film classic <\/span><span class=\"s7\">Before Sunrise,<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> was briefly seen and heard pla<\/span><span class=\"s6\">ying the Goldberg Variations\u2026.
