Born in Sydney, Kate Clark graduated from the University of Sydney on modern and baroque flutes in 1985. In the same year she was a finalist in the Australian National Flute Competition and guest principal flute with the Australian Chamber Orchestra.<\/p>\n

From 1986-1990 she studied baroque and classical flutes with Barthold Kuijken at the Royal Conservatorium in The Hague gaining her Soloist\u2019s Diploma \u201ccum laude,\u201d and from 1990-1992 renaissance flute at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland under the guidance of Anne Smith. In 1993 she won the first prize in the Brugge International Early Music Competition.<\/p>\n

Since 1988 Kate Clark has performed and recorded throughout Europe as a soloist and with chamber ensembles (Musica Ad Rhenum, Amphion Ensemble, Cantus C\u00f6lln), and orchestras (Freiburger Barockorchester, Concerto K\u00f6ln, Deutsche H\u00e4ndel-Solisten, Rheinische Kantorei, Les Musiciens du Louvre, Le Concert Spirituel). As principal flautist with Les Musiciens du Louvre from 1994-2006 she toured extensively throughout Europe and the United States. She makes regular appearances in Australia as soloist with The Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, The Australian Chamber Orchestra, and as artist-in-residence at the University of Western Australia.<\/p>\n

Kate Clark gives lectures and courses in Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Israel, and Australia, and she teaches historical flutes at the Royal Conservatorium in The Hague. She lives in Amsterdam with her partner and their two sons.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>

Amanda Markwick<\/strong> earned both her bachelor\u2019s degree (in modern flute and French language and literature) and her master\u2019s degree (in early music, Baroque transverse flute) at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. There, she studied under Kate Lukas, Thomas Robertello, and Barbara Kallaur. This was followed by another bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degree program in early music at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in The Hague, with a focus on classical, Baroque, and Renaissance transverse flutes. As a scholarship recipient of the Dutch government\u2019s Huygens Foundation for exceptionally talented international students pursuing a master\u2019s degree, she studied there under Kate Clark, Wilbert Hazelzet, and Barthold Kuijken.<\/p>\n

As a guest musician, Amanda performs with, among others, the \u201cIndianapolis Baroque Orchestra,\u201d the \u201cBach Orchestra of the Netherlands,\u201d the \u201cHong Kong Early Music Society,\u201d the \u201cHannoversche Hofkapelle,\u201d the \u201cRheinische Kantorei\u2014Das Kleine Konzert\u201d with Hermann Max, the \u201cLautten Compagney\u201d under Wolfgang Katschner, and \u201cCantus C\u00f6lln\u201d under Konrad Jungh\u00e4nel. Over the years, she has been a founding member of various chamber music ensembles throughout Europe. With \u201cBarcelona Barroc,\u201d she has participated in various chamber music and orchestral projects. Amanda performs Renaissance music with the \u201cAttaignant Consort\u201d (Renaissance transverse flute) and classical chamber music with the ensembles \u201cEloquentia\u201d and the \u201cTrio Delta.\u201d Together with Clavichord in the ensemble \u201cIl Sussurro,\u201d she explores the beautiful, nuanced timbres of early Classical-period transverse flutes.<\/p>\n

As an active musician, Amanda has performed at the \u201cBloomington Early Music Festival\u201d in Indiana, the \u201cInternational Harp Convention\u201d in Prague, the \u201cCorso Internazionale di Musica Antica\u201d in Urbino, the \u201cCasa de Mateus Festival\u201d in Vila Real, the \u201cFestival Internacional de M\u00fasica\u201d in Cadaqu\u00e9s, the \u201cFestival Internacional de M\u00fasica Cl\u00e1sica\u201d in Ribadeo, the \u201cUtrecht Early Music Festival\u201d in the Netherlands, the \u201cK\u00f6then Bach Festival,\u201d and the \u201cTrigonale Festival\u201d of Early Music in Austria.<\/p>\n

In addition to her teaching activities in Berlin, Amanda is regularly invited as a guest lecturer by institutions such as the Conservatorium van Amsterdam (Netherlands), \u201cH.I.P.S.T.E.R. Ireland,\u201d and the \u201cIrish World Academy\u201d in Limerick (Ireland), the \u201cBauhinia Musikhaus\u201d in Hong Kong, and the Kuopio Conservatory (Finland). The Dutch music journal \u201cFluit\u201d published her article on Baroque flute playing for beginners. The book \u201cThe Renaissance Flute: A Contemporary Guide,\u201d which Amanda co-authored with Kate Clark, was published by Oxford University Press in August 2020. In 2021, she received a NEUSTART-KULTUR grant from \u201eDeutscher Musikrat\u201c.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>
