In artistic research the word “reflection” is booming, and its meanings range widely: from spoken and discursive analysis before or after an artistic performance to improvisation as sonic reflection in the artistic activity itself. The RAPP Lab project playfully investigates the qualities, and often slippery properties of “reflection” as being vague, concrete, unvoiced or embodied and creates six experimental settings (Labs) in which students can expand and specify their reflective skills. We invite the artistic research community to switch the perspective from “What is reflection?” to “In which learning and teaching parameters and conditions can reflection and critical thinking in artistic research emerge?”

This digital event will focus on the three Labs which have taken place during the year 2022: Lab 3 (May 2022) at the HfMT Cologne on Embodied Reflection, Lab 4 (June 2022) contributed by mdw Vienna on Transculturality, and Lab 5 (September 2022) by the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre in Tallinn on Autoethnography. It will present a kaleidoscope of methodological perspectives of artistic research between these three learning environments.

RAPP stands for “Reflection based Artistic Professional Practice” and brings together the artistic research expertise of seven partner institutions in Europe. During a series of multi-national, experimental, thematically and methodologically differentiated encounters, described as Labs, advanced music students have the opportunity to try out new teaching and learning formats. RAPP Lab is a three-year EU-funded research project supported by the ERASMUS+ programme “Strategic Partnerships”. RAPP Lab explores how the reflective methodologies of artistic research empower musicians to creatively respond to the economic-cultural environment with which they are confronted. The project brings together the artistic research expertise of seven partner institutions in six different European states: Association Européenne des Conservatoires – AEC, Bruxelles, Belgium; Conservatorio di Musica Santa Cecilia, Rome, Italy; Eesti Muusika-ja Teatriakadeemia,  Tallinn, Estonia; Hochschule für Musik und Tanz, Cologne, Germany (as Coordinator); mdw – Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst, Vienna, Austria; Norges musikhøgskole, NMH,  Oslo, Norway; Orpheus Instituut  Ghent, Belgium.

Closing presentation at the Weltmuseum Wien on May 20, 2022

The Artistic Research Project Creative (Mis)Understandings is based on a collaboration between poet-singers of the indigenous Tao group from Taiwan and composers and sound creators trained in the tradition of European Art Music. The project aims to create strategies which on the one hand contribute to revitalizing Tao cultural practices in a sustainable way, and on the other hand redefine social roles of European, academically trained composers and sound creators.

As part of the „Long Night of Research (Lange Nacht der Forschung)“ we will present – in an extended happening – the encounter of culture and traditional songs of the Tao in performance-exhibition format. This includes performances of traditional Tao song and dance, compositions and improvisations transforming the songs into various contemporary contexts in styles of rock, experimental, European art music etc., complemented by sound and video installations. There will also be time for exchanges, meetings, dialogues with the audience, what may create a platform of sharing and encounters during this event.

For the third time, the mdw invites applications for internal funding for pilot projects in the field of artistic research. A total of €20,000 are available for innovative research projects clearly demonstrating the use of appropriate artistic research methodology. Preference will be given to projects serving as pilots for potential third-party funding applications, especially within the framework of the FWF’s PEEK programme, and/or to projects that could lead to prospective publications (e.g. in the Research Catalogue), as well as to transdisciplinary and collaborative projects.

All members of the mdw, in particular young artists and academics, including (PhD or Doctor Artium Program) students, are eligible to apply. Projects should be implemented within the course of twelve months. Up to 5,000 euros are available for each successful application.

Eligible costs

All direct costs (staff, equipment and travel costs, subcontracts, and other substantiated costs) in connection with the implementation of the project as well as the presentation and publication of results are eligible for funding. Co-financing through personal or third-party funds is possible. Payments are to be made directly through the respective institute or the Artistic Research Center.

Selection procedure

Successful applications will be determined by an interdisciplinary jury of internal and external experts under the direction of Prof. Johannes Kretz. Final decisions are expected to be announced by the end of April 2022.

Application documents:

• a project description and timeline (maximum three pages)
• supplement containing brief biographical information and a list of relevant publications, artistic works and other achievements (maximum two pages),
• Budget calculations (in tabular format)

When calculating project budgets, please ensure that regulations regarding the awarding of contracts for work and services are observed.

Reporting:

A final report must be submitted within three months of the end of the project, together with a breakdown of costs (in tabular form) and a comparison of planned and actual expenses. If applicable, funding recipients are required to store open access materials in the publication platform pub.mdw. Other outputs (videos, audios and other research data) must be managed through the mdwRepository.

Applications must be submitted electronically by 28.3.2022 to forschungsfoerderung@mdw.ac.at and should be marked with the subject “AR-Pilot application”.
