Axel Petri-Preis studied music education and German studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (mdw), graduating in 2005 with distinction. He also studied musicology at the University of Vienna, completing his PhD in music mediation with distinction in 2021 with a study on the learning paths of classically trained musicians.
He completed his teaching internship in 2005/06 at the AHS Geringergasse 2 in Vienna, before working as a Fulbright Teaching Assistant at Bard College NY in the following academic year. After his time abroad, he spent several years teaching in adult education and at two Viennese secondary schools. From 2012 to 2014, Axel Petri-Preis was a fellow of the Masterclass on Music Education, an excellence initiative of the Körber Foundation in Hamburg.
Since 2007, Axel Petri-Preis has been active as a music mediator for institutions such as Neue Oper Wien, Wien Modern, Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Wiener Konzerthaus, Jeunesse, Württembergisches Kammerorchester Heilbronn, and many others. He develops new concert formats, conducts workshops and introductory lectures for various audiences, moderates concerts, coaches orchestras and ensembles, and designs program booklets. His projects have received the Project Europa Award, the Teacher’s Award from the Federation of Austrian Industries, and the Aviso Award, and have been nominated for the Junge Ohren Award and the Places of Respect. He has given guest lectures at institutions including the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, the Anton Bruckner Private University, the Central European University, the Sibelius Academy, and the University of Cologne. He teaches the seminar “Convincing Mediation Concepts” at the Institute for Cultural Concepts and held a teaching position at the inter-university program Science and Art, a cooperation between the University of Salzburg and Mozarteum University, in the summer semester of 2023.
In his research, Axel Petri-Preis focuses on the training and further education of musicians at conservatoires, particularly with regard to music mediation, community engagement in classical music, discrimination-sensitive music mediation, and practices and formats of music mediation. He is the founder and Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Music Mediation (IJMM), and most recently co-edited the Handbook of Music Mediation published by transcript.
Axel Petri-Preis has been working at the Department of Music Education Research and Practice (IMP) since 2017. He serves as chair of curricular commission of the MA Contemporary Arts Practice and is member of the curricular commission of the MA Music in Society.
