A quick insight into the rooms of the ub.mdw

Lending Desk

The lending desk is located immediately inside the entrance to the ub.mdw and is accessible barrier-free. This is where items are borrowed and returned. Items ordered via the online catalogue can be picked up here.

Reading Room

The Bruno Walter Reading Room is a quiet zone where library users can read, study, and work in a concentrated manner. It’s here that the shelves with important reference works (dictionaries, encyclopaedias, handbooks, bibliographies, work catalogues, etc.), complete editions of composers’ works, and the various Music Monuments series can be found. The Reading Room holdings cannot be borrowed.

Directly outside the Reading Room, four research PCs and a book scanner are available for your use. This is also where the library’s Information Service is located. Ring the bell on the Information Desk to call a library employee, who will be happy to help you regarding questions on research and library use.

Open Stacks – Music

The open stacks for music consist of three rooms where you’ll find sheet music for individual instruments, ensemble music, and vocal music. This music can be borrowed and is organised according to instruments and/or ensemble size.

A classification system with spine labels on each item is used for your orientation.

Open Stacks – Books/Periodicals

Here, you’ll find a representative selection of items available for borrowing that consists of books on various musical topics as well as currently published periodicals.

Also available is a collection of music-related fiction, poetry, and other literature.

Group Rooms

For small groups who wish to study or work together, two group rooms are available. These are currently approved for use by 7 (Group Room 1) and 9 (Group Room 2) individuals and must be reserved in advance.

Closed Stacks

A portion of the books and sheet music held by the ub.mdw is kept in two closed stacks areas on the lower level to which only library personnel have access. These items must therefore be ordered via the online catalogue.
