Like Science to your Ears - How do I make my own science podcast?

People listen to podcasts while relaxing, while concentrating or even on the go. Diverse in form, duration and design, they have become an attractive format both for providing entertainment and for sharing specific information and content to specially targeted audiences. Podcasts have become an integral part of science communication. Scientists can use them to communicate their complex research content in a way that is appropriate for the respective target group, helping them to appeal to a non-scientific audience. And while this free, self-designed audio format is fun, it provides at the same time plenty of room for serious discussion.

As part of our efforts to develop early-stage researchers at the mdw, the research support office is once again organising the multi-part workshop "Like Science to your Ears - How do I make my own science podcast?" The workshop provides professional support for early-stage researchers in the production of their first podcast episode.

In a first joint online module, participants learn the basics and first steps of producing a science podcast. Afterwards, participants work independently on their own production over the summer. The second module offers individual support and feedback from the workshop team in order to produce a rough version by the third module. The final module – the listening café (“Hör-Café”) – offers us the chance to listen to the podcasts together and provide constructive peer feedback.

The programme invites early-stage researchers at the mdw from all academic disciplines (in their PhD studies or up to 5 years after graduation) to apply: We are looking for concepts (1-3 pages) for the first podcast episode (10-15 minutes), which is to be produced during the workshop.

Applications are open until 6. November 2022 via email: zethner@mdw.ac.at

Dates:

  • Module 1 - basics and first steps of production: 28.11.2022, 9:30-16:00
  • Module 2 - individual feedback and support (approx. 1 h): 16.1.2023
  • Module 3 - listening café ("Hör-Café"): 24.3.2023, 14:00-18:00

If required, the programme can also be held in English - please let us know when registering.
