Subject Area of Stage Performance|Musical Theatre Direction

In the Department of Musical Theatre, we focus on the development and design of stage repertoire ranging from the operas of the pre-classical period through the central works of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries to modern and experimental forms. In these master's programs, we build on all the skills acquired in the bachelor's program. The linking of careful musical part study and all elements of performing role design are central. This includes, for example, the linguistic as well as psychological penetration of a work, the varied use of movement design and body language, the relationships of people in space, the coordination between musical and scenic requirements, and the use of stage design, props and costumes. The results of our work are presented in regular public performances at the Schönbrunn Palace Theater or the Neue Studiobühne, thus providing an ideal springboard for students who wish to pursue a career as an opera singer.
In the area of Musical Theater Directing, the focus is on training future directors. In this diploma program, the arc is drawn from the spark of the first idea to a deep musical, dramaturgical and psychological understanding of works of musical theater. Methods for developing an individual, coherent directorial concept are explored, as is the use of technical design tools. Constructive communication as the basis of any creative collaboration is emphasized from the very beginning and is practiced, among other things, with students of the bachelor's and master's degree programs in voice during staged rehearsals. In the development of scenic projects, culminating in the independent diploma production, we convey craftsmanship as well as an awareness of the relevance of social influences.
