Subject Area Voice
Mission Statement Vocal Department,
welcome to the website of the Department of Voice at the Institute of Voice and Music Theater at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna (mdw).
As spokesperson for the voice faculty, I would like to give a brief overview of our department's mission statement.
The entire mdw stands for an atmosphere in which both gender-equitable orientation and harmonious cooperation and participation of all participants are highly valued and a matter of course for all of us.
The vocal development of the singers is the focus of the vocal studies at our institute, surrounded by a rich offer of subjects, whereby one should perhaps mention the body subjects in particular, since we place special emphasis on the fact that physical coordination, movement, dance, etc. should inevitably also be part of vocal coordination.
Physical singing" is a declared goal of the training of young singers at the mdw's Institute of Singing.
We are particularly proud of the fact that we are able to unite a very wide spectrum of aspiring singers at our institute.
Thus, we have a very wide range of young students, the preparatory course, the bachelor's program and the three master's programs, both in terms of the age of the students and in terms of their vocal development.
Of course, the vocal department is international not only in terms of students, but also in terms of teachers, which allows for a lively cultural exchange.
The training, especially in the master's programs, is oriented towards the realities of everyday professional life in opera houses and in the concert business.
We impart a broad knowledge of repertoire across all musical epochs and a flexible way of implementing input. This also includes performing skills on stage and a basic understanding of self-management.
Vienna is of course a very special and inspiring location when it comes to music in general, singing, art and culture.
Many important composers come from Vienna or have spent many years there to absorb this "genius loci".
We all try to preserve this "Viennese style" or rather this "genius loci" in our music and in our work with the students.
