Austrian cellist Matthias Gredler was born in Munich, Germany in 1975 as the son of a family of
musicians. He received his first cello lessons from his father Edgar Gredler, who was a solo cellist with
the Munich Radio Orchestra. Matthias went on to study under Heinrich Schiff in Salzburg and Vienna
from 1990 to 1998. He continued his musical education under Martin Hornstein in Vienna and Miklós
Perényi in Budapest from 1998 to 2000.

From 1997 to 2000, Matthias majored in chamber music (string quartet, duo piano/cello) under the
Altenberg Trio at the Vienna Conservatory and under Rainer Schmidt at Mozarteum Salzburg.
He received further valuable input in master classes under such accomplished artists as Arto Noras,
Peter Matzka, Claus Christian Schuster, Hatto Bayerle, Norbert Brainin, Sigmund Nissl, Martin
Lovett and Valentin Berlinsky.

Matthias developed an interest in chamber music at a very early age. In 1986, he founded a piano
trio with his sister Manuela Gredler and the pianist Jakob Fichert. The trio was in existence until
1998. As a child and an adolescent, Matthias was awarded numerous prizes and played regular
concerts both in Germany and abroad. Through numerous appearances at renowned festivals
Matthias Gredler made a name for himself both as a soloist and as a chamber musician.
From 1997 to 2001, he served as the cellist for the Viatores Quartet, of which he was a founding
member. In addition, Matthias held the position of solo cellist with the Munich Chamber Orchestra
from 1999 to 2001.

In 2001, Matthias Gredler joined the Vienna Piano Trio as its new cellist. He toured extensively with this
trio, playing in renowned venues and at major festivals all over the world for almost two decades.
As part of his work as an artist and a teacher, Matthias regularly holds master classes in Europe,
Great Britian, the USA, Canada and South America, for example at the Toronto Summer Music
Festival or the Internationale Kammermusikakademie Hohenstaufen.
Since 2019, Matthias Gredler is teaching at the University of Music and performing Art Vienna
and the University of Music and Theater in Munich.

Matthias Gredler has a particular interest in contemporary music. Over the last years, the Vienna
Piano Trio world-premiered pieces by composers such as Friedrich Cerha, Johannes Maria Staud,
Paul Engel, Harrison Birthwisthle, György Kurtag, Michael Gredler, Thomas Larcher and others,
with some of these works written specifically for the trio‘s own concert cycle at Vienna
Konzerthaus.
As member of the Vienna Piano Trio, Matthias Gredler has received numerous awards for
recordings, for example two Echo Klassik prizes – in 2010 for their interpretation of Joseph Haydn‘s
trios and in 2017 for their recording of Johannes Brahms‘ trios.
