The Slovenian guitarist and composer Nejc Kuhar (*1987) earned his master’s degree in guitar (performance) under Prof. Alvaro Pierri at the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, and he also completed a master’s degree in composition under Rainer Bischof and Christian Minkowitsch at what is now the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna (MUK). Since 2018, he has been pursuing a PhD in Music Research at the University of Surrey (England) under Prof. Steve Goss.
As a guitarist and as a composer, Kuhar has triumphed at important competitions (in China, the USA, Italy, Turkey, Germany, et al.), and his works have also been printed by various music publishers including the guitar publishers Berben in Italy, Les Productions d’OZ in Canada, and Trekel in Germany.
As a soloist and as a member of the Eminent Duo, Nejc Kuhar has been heard at numerous guitar festivals as well as in concert series across Europe, Asia, and the United States. He has also given master classes and lectures as well as participated in juries.
His works have been performed at the world’s most important concert venues including at the Musikverein and Konzerthaus in Vienna, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Rachmaninov Saal at Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Conservatory, the Slovenian Philharmonic Hall , etc., and they have also been included as obligatory repertoire at guitar competitions in Sarajevo (2012), Hong Kong (2014), Changsha (2017), and Antwerp (2018). January 2011 saw the release of String Modulations, which featured renowned Slovene musicians and was also Kuhar’s first CD to contain his own music.
Nejc Kuhar was appointed to a senior lecturer position at the mdw in 2019, and he has been a professor of guitar and chamber music at the Province of Burgenland’s Joseph Haydn Conservatory in Eisenstadt since 2018. He also lectures at a number of university-level institutions including the Juilliard School, the Curtis Institute of Music, the Manhattan School of Music, and Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts.
