Lower Austria native Elisabeth Sánchez-Herrera (née Rollenitz) began her musical studies in 2005 at the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Prof. Josef Niederhammer and graduated with honours in 2014. She also studied double bass with Werner Fleischmann in the mdw’s Instrumental Music Education programme from 2005 to 2009.
Sánchez Herrera is a past winner of the Zoltan Kodaly Award at the mdw’s International Summer Academy (isa). She has gathered orchestral experience as a substitute with the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Wiener Symphoniker, and the Musikkollegium Winterthur in Switzerland, and she held a temporary contract with the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Lower Austria as well as completed an internship with the Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz. She is also a former member of the Strauss-Capelle Vienna and of conductor Ádám Fischer’s Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra (now: Haydn Philharmonic)
Sánchez Herrera has performed as part of chamber music ensembles including Wiener Virtuosen and the Lanner-Strauß-Ensemble Wien.
Concert tours have taken her all over Europe as well as to Japan, China, India, and Peru.
Since December 2017, she has been a member of the orchestra of the Vienna Volksoper.
Alongside her orchestral playing, Elisabeth Sánchez Herrera has taught at the mdw’s Department of Folk Music Research and Ethnomusicology and for the music school associations of Böheimkirchen-Kasten-Kirchstetten and Bisamberg-Enzersfeld-Leobendorf as well as at the music school in Sieghartskirchen. She has also worked for the Association of Peruvian Youth Orchestras in Lima, Peru as a lecturer and double bass teacher.
Her activities as a soloist have included multiple performances together with bass-baritone Daniel Gutmann as the concert duo Bassmatico, in which the double bass is heard in interplay with the human bass register.
Since 2020, Elisabeth Sánchez Herrera has been employed by the Joseph Hellmesberger Department as a senior lecturer, in which capacity she has provided individual instruction on the double bass as well as taught Didactics and Teaching Practice courses.
