Music Education – Instruments (IME) | Double Bass


Programme objective:
Certification to teach 2 instruments or
1 instrument and voice in academic secondary schools (AHS)

Teaching activities may include:
Instrumental and/or voice instruction as an elective at academic secondary schools and as a compulsory subject in special upper-cycle programmes. Teaching of groups.

Admission criteria:
The level of skill demonstrated by the applicant in the entrance examination must be such that the level needed to teach this instrument and/or voice can be attained within this programme of study.

Entrance Examination:

As a 1st Instrument (corresponds to BA IGP)
3 works from different eras
a) 1 etude
b) 1 fast movement
c) 1 freely chosen work

As a 2nd Instrument (corresponds to ME: 1st instrument and IGP: complementary 2nd instrument) 

  1. Scale and triad arpeggio covering two octaves
  2. 1 freely chosen etude
  3. 1 freely chosen performance piece

Bachelor’s degree examination:

As a 1st instrument (corresponds to IGP: bachelor’s degree examination)

A total of 4 pieces must be prepared: 

  • One’s programme must include works from at least 3 different eras chosen from the stylistic categories of baroque, classical (incl. pre-classical), romantic, and 20th/21st century works that differ markedly in style from works belonging to the traditional repertoire.
  • One’s programme must contain a concerto at a level of difficulty equivalent to that of Dittersdorf’s Concerto No. 2 in D Major.
  • One’s programme must include a work for ensemble (chamber music in any combination except for double bass / piano).

The piece with which the exam performance begins may be chosen by the candidate.

As a 2nd instrument (corresponds to ME: 1st instrument and IGP: complementary 2nd instrument)

 A total of 3 pieces must be prepared:

  • One’s programme must include works from at least 3 different eras chosen from the stylistic categories of baroque, classical (incl. pre-classical), romantic, and 20th/21st century (incl. all areas of popular music); one of the chosen stylistic eras may be represented by 2 pieces.
  • One’s programme must contain a fast movement from a concerto (or other concert piece).
  • One’s programme must include a work for ensemble (chamber music in any combination except for double bass / piano).

The piece with which the exam performance begins may be chosen by the candidate.

One’s chosen artistic programme must be made available in printed form at the examination.
