Stefan Mendl

was born in Vienna in 1966.

He took first piano lessons with Manfred Wagner-Artzt and later studied with Alexander Jenner at the University of Music in Vienna.

In his early years he appeared regularly as a soloist in Austria and abroad.

He was a founding member of the Vienna Piano Trio - Wiener Klaviertrio“ in 1988 which- after studies with artists like the Trio di Trieste, the Haydn Trio-Wien, the Beaux Arts Trio, Isaac Stern, Jaime Laredo and members of the LaSalle-and Guarneri Quartets- soon became one of Europe’s leading chamber ensembles. Since then the ensemble has appeared in literally most of the major chamber-music venues in Europe and overseas and has taken part in many of the major chamber-music festivals.

Numerous CD recordings on the Naxos,Nimbus and MDG-labels have found international acclaim.(Gramophone Editor´s Choice, Echo-Klassik,2010 and 2017, Opus Klassik,2020 among many others)
In 2010/11 the
„Wiener Klaviertrio-Vienna Piano Trio was Ensemble in Residence at Londons Wigmore-Hall and was resident piano trio at the Wiener Konzerthaus (Mozartsaaal) since the 2006/7 season.

Stefan Mendl appears frequently in duo-recitals with cellist Clemens Hagen and works regularly with artists like Jörg Widmann, Daniel Sepec, Ruth Ziesak, Donna Brown and Mark Padmore.

He was giving masterclasses at Wigmore-Hall-London, the Royal College of Music-London, the Sibelius Academy,Helsinki, the HMdK, Stuttgart, the Hochschule Hanns Eisler, Berlin, the Toronto Summer Music Academy, the Tronheim Chamber Music Festival and Academy as well as many universities in the United States and Wellington, New Zealand among others.

Stefan Mendl is teaching Chamber-Music with piano at the University of Music and Performing Arts -mdw Vienna.

He served frequently as a jury-member (e.g. Internationaler Joseph Haydn-Wettbewerb, Wien 2014, ARD-Musikwettbewerb München, 2018, Concours International de Musique de Chambre de Lyon, CIMCL, 2022)

In September 2022 he took part in the prestigious Trondheim Chamber Music Festival in Norway giving masterclasses and performing with members of the German Tetzlaff Quartet among others.
