The Bachelor's degree programme in Tonmeister studies at the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna qualifies students to realise music productions and film projects as well as sound reinforcement projects of medium complexity, from artistic and technical planning to creative implementation and completion. Graduates are able to lead small audio teams and realise artistic decision-making processes independently and autonomously in consultation with instrumentalists and singers, conductors, directors and producers.

Over a period of four years, students are taught sound theoretical principles in the areas of music theory as well as electrical engineering and studio technology. As the semester progresses, the focus is increasingly placed on the practical implementation of the theoretical knowledge acquired in music and film sound production. By choosing a specialisation, students can deepen their knowledge in the respective area of interest from the third semester onwards. The large proportion of elective subjects within the specialisation enables students to set individual priorities. This allows them to strengthen their performance potential and develop outstanding skills in the best possible way.

As part of the entrance examination, students decide on one of three specialisations, which they pursue from the third semester onwards:

  • Classical Music Production
  • Popular music production
  • Film sound

Regardless of the specialisation chosen, students can also study sound system and sound direction in depth.
