The Master's degree programme in Tonmeister studies at the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna qualifies students to take responsibility for complex audio productions, from artistic and technical planning to creative implementation and completion.

The focus is on sharpening the artistic profile. Graduates are able to lead a larger audio team and implement artistic decision-making processes in consultation with instrumentalists and singers, conductors, directors, music producers and rights holders in terms of copyright (labels, publishers, film producers) independently and on their own responsibility. Over a period of two years, competences – building on knowledge and skills already acquired in the area of the chosen specialisation – are further deepened and refined. The focus is on the media realisation of complex artistic projects, which are accompanied and evaluated in individual artistic lessons.

The core of the Master's degree programme in Tonmeister studies consists of deepening previously acquired skills in one of three specialisations:

  • Classical music production
  • Popular music production
  • Film sound

Admission to the Master's degree programme in Sound Engineering requires the completion of a relevant Bachelor's degree programme or another relevant degree programme of at least the same higher education level at a recognised domestic or foreign post-secondary educational institution. In any case, the Bachelor's programme Tonmeister_in at the mdw is a relevant previous study programme.
