Cultural Institutions Studies
Cultural Institutions Studies examine societal changes in the cultural sector from a multifaceted, global, and power-critical perspective. They explore the interplay of structural patterns, recurring norms and values, as well as the social actions of actors and their relationships. The focus is on how these interactions are organized and institutionalized. From a sociological perspective, institutions are understood as symbolic orders and practices that shape the framework for communication and interaction. These social institutions are linked to individual cultural meanings. When a particular interpretation of a cultural institution is imposed on others, it can lead to discrimination, power inequalities, and ideologies—key topics in Cultural Institutions Studies.
