Music beyond Artistry and Nationalism beyond the Nation: German and Austrian Musical Mass Entertainment, 1848–1914

In nineteenth-century Central Europe, music underwent significant transformations: some gained new cultural weight as "serious" art, while less serious music increasingly shaped the sonic spaces of the everyday. This dissertation explores late-nineteenth-century musical life in Germany and Austria, proposing that music — serious and unserious alike — became a vital space for negotiating the period's defining social and national boundaries.
