The phenomenon of cultural memory coined by Jan and Aleida Assmann developed into an important concept for scholars in cultural studies in the late 20th century. Memory is understood to be inherited knowledge about the past in the broadest sense (e.g. recollections), which a society (keyword: collective memory) can reconstruct from their contemporary frames of reference. Memory is thus not only a reservoir of the past, but also fundamental for the embedding of the past into contemporary societal contexts. In addition to texts and images, cultural memory can also be represented by means of audio-visual documents. Telling Sounds seizes upon the theoretical basis of the concept of memory and attempts to integrate music and/or expressions related to it in the broadest sense into the current discourse.
