Musikschulforschung am IMP
Musikschulen, die außerschulischen Musikunterricht anbieten, der größtenteils mit öffentlichen Mitteln finanziert wird, sind eine einzigartige europäische Einrichtung. Diese Schulen fördern eine frühzeitige Vorbereitung auf eine berufliche musikalische Laufbahn, aber für die Mehrheit der Lernenden besteht das Hauptziel darin, Fähigkeiten zu entwickeln, die musikalische Aktivitäten als integralen Bestandteil eines erfüllten Lebens ermöglichen.
Musikschulen spielen eine wesentliche Rolle in der Bildungs- und Kulturlandschaft ihrer Gemeinden und Regionen und leisten demzufolge einen wesentlichen Beitrag für das gesellschaftliche Leben. Sie arbeiten mit lokalen Pflichtschulen und anderen Akteur_innen in formalen, nicht-formalen und informellen Kontexten zusammen und bieten jungen Menschen verschiedene Möglichkeiten, an unterschiedlichen kulturellen Communities und Veranstaltungen teilzunehmen und diese mitzugestalten. In ganz Europa bieten Musikschulen wichtige Beschäftigungsmöglichkeiten für Musiker_innen und Künstler_innen mit instrumental-/gesangspädagogischer und/oder künstlerischer Qualifikation.
Musikschulforschung ist ein inter- und transdisziplinäres Forschungsfeld, das sich auf eine Vielzahl von Theorien stützt. Zu den relevanten Wissensgebieten gehören verschiedene Aspekte der Musikpädagogik und Musikpsychologie, Kulturpolitik und -management, Bildungspolitik, Recht und Governance, Philosophie, Geschichte, Entwicklungspsychologie, Sozialökologie etc. Während es offensichtliche Überschneidungen mit instrumental-/gesangspädagogischer Forschung gibt, liegt der Fokus der Musikschulforschung insbesondere darauf, welche Erwartungen an eine öffentlich subventionierte Bildungs- und Kultureinrichtung gestellt werden können, die vielfältige Schnittstellen zur Gesellschaft aufweist.
Die Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien hat 2017 in Kooperation mit der Europäischen Musikschulunion die Europäischen Musikschulsymposien ins Leben gerufen und 2018 eine Professur eingerichtet, die sich ausschließlich der Musikschulforschung widmet. Am Institut für Musikpädagogische Forschung und Praxis (IMP) ist der Forschungsbereich Musikschulforschung in enger Verbindung mit den Fachbereichen Bildungswissenschaften und Instrumental-/Gesangspädagogik positioniert. Darüber hinaus ergeben sich institutsübergreifende Kooperationen unter anderem zu den Cultural Institutions Studies und der Musiksoziologie.

Music school research at IMP
Publicly funded music schools that offer music education beyond and outside of the compulsory school system are a unique European institution. These schools facilitate early preparation for professional careers in music, but for the majority of learners, a primary aim is to develop the ability to engage actively with music as an integral part of a flourishing life.
Music schools play a significant role in the educational, cultural and social life of their communities and regions. They collaborate with local comprehensive schools and other actors in formal, nonformal and informal settings and offer young people diverse possibilities to participate in and shape cultural communities and events. Across Europe, music schools provide important career avenues for musicians and performing artists with pedagogical and/or artistic qualifications.
Music school research is an inter- and transdisciplinary field of study that draws on a wide range of theories. Relevant areas of knowledge include various aspects of music education and music psychology, cultural and educational policy, cultural management, educational leadership, law and governance, philosophy, history, lifespan psychology, social ecology, etc. While there are evident overlaps with research on instrumental and vocal teaching and learning, music school research tends to focus in particular on what might be expected of a publicly subsidised cultural institution with multiple interfaces in society.
The University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna initiated the European Music School Symposium in 2017 in cooperation with the European Music School Union and established a professorship dedicated entirely to music school research in 2018. At the Department of Music Education and Practice (IMP), music school research is closely connected with the educational sciences and with instrumental/vocal pedagogy. In addition, there are interdepartmental collaborations with Cultural Institutions Studies and music sociology.

- Music schools in changing societies: institutional challenges, societal mission, collaboration, teacher professionalisation
- Music schools as institutions: framework conditions, professional field, leadership, European models
