Georgia

by Ulrich Morgenstern

Georgia is well-known for its rich and very divers traditions of folk and church music, closely connected with vocal multipart singing. Since 2004 the IVE entertains cooperation with the Tbilisi State Conservatory, in the framework of conference visits and Erasmus exchanges (Rusudan Tsurtsumia 2016, Nino Razmadse 2019). Workshops with Georgian folk music took place in 2015, 2016 , and twice 2019. In 2018 Wei-Ya Lin, Ulrich Morgenstern and Hande Sağlam used a Staff Mobility (Erasmus+) in Turkey for a visit in West-Georgian region Achara, together with Abdullah Akat (Trabzon). One year later an excursion within the seminar Volksmusik und Ethnomusikologie entailed a stronger implementation of Georgian topics in teaching. Studies by Ulrich Morgenstern established instrumental folk music of Georgia as a new field of research. In the series of film presentations Cinematographia Musicae Popularis (Volksmusik im Film) two presentations by Nona Lomidze were devoted to Georgian vocal traditions.
