Audio-visual Archive of the Institute of Folk Music Research and Ethnomusicology

Fieldwork is the most fundamental research method for folk music research and ethnomusicology. In both disciplines, we often work with orally transmitted music traditions. Field recordings, then, are not only the primary sources for research and constitute a type of institutional memory - in them, the collective memory of many communities is recorded and preserved.

Since its founding in 1965, researchers from the Department of Folk Music Research and Ethnomusicology (IVE) have made more than 10,000 hours of audio and video field recordings in a variety of formats (audio cassettes, CDs, DAT tapes, DVs, VHS cassettes, DVDs, reel-to-reel tape, Hi8 cassettes, and MDs). Around 30,000 photographs, 6,000 slides, and many different additional items (like minutes, field notes, posters, concert programmes, flyers and posters) complement these collections.

More than 50 percent of the video and audio recordings are over 30 years old and are thus preserved on non-digital media. Since 2010 the Institute has been carrying out a process to digitalize and archive the material to avoid the danger of deterioration.
This archiving process is being carried out with the program archivis pro. This database not only facilitates a better categorization of the field recordings and an improved overview of the materials, but also provides direct access to digitized recordings and related additional material.

The preparation for an online database is expected to be finalized in 2019. This will also enable external access to the IVE archive and make the research process much easier for external researchers.
