Disciplinary History and Theories in Ethnomusicology and Folk Music Research

by Ulrich Morgenstern

The history of European folk music research is intricately connected to theoretical folkloristics, structuralist theory, sociomusicology, and ethnomusicology. Due to language barriers, but also to different research traditions, it remained hidden for a long time that many common paradigms (music in culture, performer-centered, urban, und applied research) have been developed independently or with a time-delay in the neighboring disciplines. An important step for a reappraisal of these research directions was the symposium Folk Music Research, Folkloristics, and Anthropology of Music in Europe: Pathways in the Intellectual History of Ethnomusicology, held in Oktober 2019. A publication is in preparation.
