Mag.art. Hande SAĞLAM, PhD
(Head of Archive)


Born in Istanbul in 1968, has lived in Vienna since 1993.

She obtained her bachelor’s degree in composition and music theory at Bilkent University in Ankara/Turkey, and a master's degree in music theory at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (mdw), and PhD in ethnomusicology at the same university on Alevi and Sunni characteristics of the Âşık tradition in Sivas/Anatolia.

From 2005-2015, Hande Sağlam worked at the Institute for Folk Music Research and Ethnomusicology (IVE) on research projects about music and minorities and archiving methods of audiovisual field research recordings. In 2015 she took over the archive management of the IVE. From 2016 to January 2022 she was deputy head of the IVE.

In 2022, Hande Sağlam received funding from the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Program (2232-International Fellowship for Outstanding Researchers) and worked for two years on her research project "Transmission of Knowledges: The Master-Apprentice Relationship in the Aşık Tradition" in Turkey.

Main research interests:
Music from Turkey, the Âşık tradition in Anatolia, bi- or multi-musicality, cultural/collective memory, intercultural music education, the music of minorities (especially the Turkish immigrants in Austria), archiving methodologies and methodologies of field research.
