Mag.art. Javier Silvestrini, PhD
(Senior Artist in Ethnomusicology and Deputy Department Director)


Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico; He completed his PhD in Ethnomusicology at IVE on the topic of Plena in San Juan: a musical and social phenomenon in urban Puerto Rico. Master's degree in classical guitar at the Université Laval in Québec, Canada 2002; finalized a postgraduate course in guitar (2003), and bachelor's degree in instrumental and vocal pedagogy (IGP) for classical guitar with a focus on popular music (2010) at the mdw.

He worked as a university assistant (prae doc 2019-2023) in ethnomusicology at IVE and taught at the University of Teacher Education Burgenland (2013-2019). In 2018, he worked as cofounder of the ICTMD Study Group on Music and Dance in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAT CAR), which, since 2020, he also co-chairs.
