Master of Arts in Ethnomusicology

Taking a pioneering role among universities in the German-speaking world, mdw now offers a comprehensive master program in ethnomusicology. The combination of scholarly training and musical practice accounts for the unique particularity of the study program. Accordingly, the entrance exam requires a vocal, instrumental or dance performance within a specific music tradition. Fieldwork—first hand contact with traditional music and/or dance as well as personal encounters with the individuals personifying the cultural traditions—forms a crucial aspect of the study program. The M.A. in Ethnomusicology qualifies for further PhD-studies as well as work in research and the cultural sector.
