Fine-Tuning the Future: Addressing the Needs of Young Orchestral Musicians

A joined research Project by the Motion-Emotion-Lab at the mdw and the institut SiNES Lab (musicology University of Vienna)

The increasing prevalence of physiological and psychological challenges among young orchestral musicians underscores the need for targeted interventions to support their well-being. "The Future of Youth Orchestra" (TFOYO) project, a collaboration between the Austrian Society for Music and Medicine (ÖGfMM), the Norwegian Youth Orchestra (UNOF), and the Hamburg Youth Orchestra (LMR HH), addresses these challenges through innovative and interdisciplinary approaches.

Key Objectives:

  1. Hearing Protection: Implementing effective strategies to protect musicians from auditory strain.
  2. Stage Fright Management: Teaching mental strategies to reduce performance anxiety.
  3. Physiological Coaching: Developing customized warm-up routines and physical training.

Methodology:

Our mixed-methods research combines quantitative data analysis with qualitative feedback to evaluate the impact of educational programs and interventions. By integrating cutting-edge technologies such as virtual reality, emotion tracking, and digital collaboration tools, the project ensures a modern and participant-centered approach.

Activities:

The TFOYO project includes a 10-day summer music camp, culminating in a classical orchestra concert at the prestigious Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. This initiative is complemented by video training programs and open-access online resources, allowing young musicians to benefit long-term from the knowledge gained.

Impact:

By emphasizing holistic preparation for high-level performances, this Erasmus+ partnership (2023-2025) aims to address critical gaps in existing research and influence best practices in youth orchestra projects. Its participatory approach ensures that the findings are deeply connected to the lived experiences of young musicians.
