Inclusive Ensemble “Ohrenklang”                                                       

 

Ohrenklang is a young inclusive ensemble (established 2017) that creates music (and dance), based on texts by authors of the literature competition ‘Ohrenschmaus’. It is a cooperation between students of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and young music-making people with disabilities. The overall artistic direction of Ohrenklang flows from Christoph Falschlunger, and the original idea came from Helga Neira Zugasty. It is a collaborative and creative arts project involving:

  • the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna,

  • the literary competition Ohrenschmaus for people with learning difficulties and writing talent (www.ohrenschmaus.net),

  • musicians with and without disabilities, and

  • various organisations or schools for people with disabilities.

 

Primarily, the project creates artistic-interdisciplinary fields of experience for people with disabilities and students of the mdw to encounter lived inclusion. It is based, among other things, on Art. 24 (education) and Art. 30 (participation in cultural life as well as in recreation, leisure and sport) of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (Federal Law Gazette III No. 155/2008, https://www.un.org/disabilities/documents/convention/convoptprot-e.pdf). This Convention was ratified by Austria in 2008 and also had to be implemented at university level.

 

With this project, students work in direct contact with people with disabilities. Students should be encouraged to think about inclusion in our society in order to be able to take further inclusive steps themselves in their future fields of work and activity. To this end, methodological-didactic aspects are specifically addressed and situational solutions are discussed and tried out. In this practice-oriented field of experience, everyone learns from and with each other – because ability is fun!
