Parent Coaching of Music Interventions: Working with the Parent to Support the (Autistic) Children
Eugenia Hernandez-Ruiz (Arizona State University, USA / Mexico)
This workshop will be divided into two modules that will give attendees a theoretical and practical perspective of parent coaching with families with an autistic member.
In the first part (approx. 20 minutes), Eugenia will present a theoretical framework of parent coaching, inserted within an umbrella of family-centered music therapy interventions. We will discuss differences and similarities with other models, as well as contributions from a systemic perspective. Video examples of in-person and virtual coaching work will be presented, highlighting the learning, limitations and strengths of this approach (Hernandez-Ruiz, 2020a; 2020b; Hernandez-Ruiz & Braden, 2021).
A second part of this workshop will be a space for reflection and questions in small groups and as a whole group to encourage attendees to transfer this knowledge to their own practice, as well as to encourage the expression of unique needs according to the social conditions of each country and of each attendee (approx. 25 min.).
