Anja Brunner is an assistant professor in ethnomusicology at the Department of Folk Music Research and Ethnomusicology of mdw. At MMRC, she leads the research projects "Women Musicians from Syria: Performance, Networks, Belonging/s after Migration", funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) (Elise Richter Program, project number V706-G29) and "Reverse Ethnomusicology: Migrant Musicians as Researchers" (1000-Ideen-Program of the FWF, project number TAI724; together with Cornelia Gruber).
Anja Brunner gained a doctorate in musicology from the University of Vienna (Austria) with a dissertation on the Cameroonian popular music bikutsi. She has been working as a university lecturer and researcher at the University of Vienna (Austria, 2010–2015) and the University of Bern (Switzerland, 2016–2018). She also was researcher in the project "Crossover Fads – Balkan Music in Austria" (2009–2011).
Her research and publications focus on issues of music and migration, music and postcolonialism, questions of intersectionality in music and music research, and African popular music.
