Ursula Hemetek founded the MMRC – Music and Minorities Research Center in 2019 and has since been heading it.

In 1987, Ursula Hemetek earned her Ph.D. in musicology, followed by her habilitation in ethnomusicology in 2001, both at the University of Vienna.

She has been teaching since 1992, mainly at mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Since 2002, she has been professor of ethnomusicology at the Department of Folk Music Research and Ethnomusicology there, holding the position as its director from 2011 to 2022. Ursula Hemetek was Secretary General of ICTM (International Council for Traditional Music) from 2017 to 2021 and served as chair of the ICTM Study Group on Music and Minorities from its foundation in 1999 until 2017.

Ursula Hemetek's main research focus is on music and minorities in Austria. She is publishing widely in the field of ethnomusicology and Music and Minorities (focus on Roma, Burgenland Croats, recent immigrant groups and refugees).

Ursula Hemetek has been awarded numerous prizes in the course of her research activities, the most important of which is the Wittgenstein Prize of the Austrian Science Fund FWF 2018.
