15 December 2015 witnessed the concluding presentation of the film and music project “BilderFluchten – Fluchtenkänge” at the mdw.

This project was a collaborative effort between unaccompanied underage refugees, school students of Neue Mittelschule Schopenhauerstraße 79 (an intermediate-level school in Vienna’s 18th district), and students of the mdw’s Department of Film and Television (Filmakademie Wien).

Music and Refugees

“BilderFluchten – Fluchtenklänge” was conducted as part of the project “Musik und Flüchtlinge” [Music and Refugees], which seeks to use inclusive and activist approaches to harness the great potential of the mdw. The ultimate goal is to provide support to individuals with experiences of escape and migration in their recent pasts while opening up university structures to marginalized groups.

On the Project “BilderFluchten – Fluchtenklänge”

The project “BilderFluchten - FluchtenKlänge”, which targeted unaccompanied underage refugees, was conducted in two parts:

Part 1

The young refugees produced video documentation of situations from their “new” lives in Vienna: their everyday doings, their waiting, their fears, their hopes, their learnings, their longings…

In this, students of the mdw’s Department of Film and Television (Filmakademie Wien) accompanied them and advised them technically on using hand cameras and editing video material.

Part 2

In keeping with the silent movie-era tradition of playing music live during film screenings, the young refugees developed the music for their own video sequences in dialogue-focussed interactive dialogue workshops.

mdw instrumental majors (both performance and education) and/or students from the composing classes advised them in creating their compositions and supported them on a chamber-music scale in the live realisation of their music.

In October 2015, trial lessons in rhythm were offered to interested young refugees.

Participants who opted to continue with an advanced course have done so under the supervision of the Department of Music and Movement Education and Music Therapy.
