The Office of the Dean of Research Studies is responsible for the coordination of academic studies at the mdw. This includes the PhD programme, the structured doctoral programme and the scientific-artistic Master's programme Ethnomusicology. In addition, the Dean of Academic Studies is responsible for the organisation and management of academic teaching at the following institutes:
- Institute for Musicology and Interpretation Research (IMI)
- Institute for Sociology of Music (IMS)
- Institute for Folk Music Research and Ethnomusicology (IVE)
- Institute for Cultural Management and Gender Studies (IKM)
- Institute for Musical Acoustics - Viennese Sound Style (IWK)

The Graduate Centre of the mdw is a platform of the Dean of Studies that offers doctoral students and postdocs at the mdw advice, exchange and networking. Through cooperation with other institutions (e.g. the Career Center of the Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft), it provides networking for doctoral students and makes all the important information and funding opportunities for young researchers available in the Graduate Centre Newsletter.
