Research Seminar Music Therapy 01: Participatory Research

Participatory research is a research approach in which academic researchers work together with people from the researched field as co-researchers on an equal footing as far as possible. In this course, knowledge and practical skills regarding participatory research are taught and specified for the field of music therapy.

We start with an overview of different research paradigms and elaborate on participatory research in the context of interpretative social research and mixed methods approaches. Special attention is also given to the aspect of interdisciplinary cooperation in this context. Basic assumptions, attitudes and methodological approaches of participatory research are presented and a reflection on one's own research practice is encouraged with regard to overall social and context-specific power relations, privileges and marginalisations as well as cultural localisation.

By participating in the research project "My Tune: Music Therapy from our Perspectives" (start: 1 March 2022) as part of the course, students will have the opportunity to participate in various stages and characteristics of a participatory research project with different groups of people relevant in the context of music therapy - young clients, caregivers and music therapists.
