ProMiMiC - Professional Excellence in Meaningful Music in Healthcare

ProMiMiC investigates the professional development of musicians and nurses through person-centred improvisation in hospital settings.

Earlier research into Meaningful Music in Health Care (MiMiC) suggests that person-centred forms of music making offer opportunities for professional development for the musicians and nurses involved. Firstly, by learning from each other's professions how verbal and non-verbal contact is fostered. Secondly, by using person-centred music making as a catalyst for a compassionate patient relationship on the wards.

In Professional Excellence in Meaningful Music in Healthcare (ProMiMiC), an international consortium with partners from music and health care in Groningen, The Hague, London and Vienna aim to anchor the existing live music practice of MiMiC more profoundly into hospital care. The consortium possesses the expertise to conduct practice-based research in this context into the professionalization of this music practice. In this way, it endeavours to contribute to developments such as performance-based health care, positive health and the broader community engagement of musicians.

The research teams at each ProMiMiC location have their specific research focus. In Groningen and The Hague, the focus will be on identifying components of interprofessional learning and development between musicians and nurses, and additionally studying patient contact and compassionate skills of nurses. In Vienna, the focus will be on interprofessional learning of musicians and music therapists. The focus in London will be on the development of knowledge and skills when musicians enter a new (and challenging) field such as a hospital context, particularly when musicians work with music students and when musicians work with health professionals.
