In this mdw Magazine issue’s Special, we take a deeper look at music education and point out why it’s not only important for budding artists but also of great relevance to society at large. Diverse aspects of music education are highlighted here, from the path toward beginning a music education degree programme at the mdw to an international Erasmus+ project.
You can also read in this issue about longstanding and new cooperative relationships between the mdw and various partners, such as the Korean Cultural Center in Vienna and the mumok – Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien. At the University itself, an evening concert event last semester honoured the English composer Ethel Smyth; with Smyth having been all but forgotten for far too long, the individuals responsible for the project provide some impressions of this exceptional artist’s intriguing life and works.
We also turn our focus to the numerous competitions that take place at the mdw with a look at the University’s departmental competitions as well as at this year’s all-genre mdw great talent award. A new course at Film Academy Vienna, for its part, focuses on film professionals’ mental health in the interest of preventatively combating the psychological strain that can arise in this line of work. And finally, we introduce “Tricky Moments”—an mdw webtool for diversity-attuned teaching that offers both students and faculty support in dealing with challenging teaching situations and is intended to reinforce users’ own diversity-related skills.
