In July 2023, the EU Commission granted the mdw and seven European partner universities approval for IN.TUNE. This represents a huge success—for among over 60 applications to form new European University Alliances (EUAs), only seven were selected to join this top-level format of collaboration within the Erasmus+ programme. The IN.TUNE consortium, working on the basis of pre-existing bi- and multilateral cooperative arrangements between its constituent institutions, began in September 2022 with the development of its concept for intensified, pan-European university cooperation—for the step-by-step implementation of which around EUR 8.6 m of European funding has now been approved.
IN.TUNE consists of the following eight institutions:

- NMH – Norwegian Academy of Music (Oslo)
- University of the Arts The Hague – Royal Conservatoire The Hague
- Uniarts – Sibelius Academy (Helsinki)
- National University of Music Bucharest
- University of Arts in Belgrade
A broad range of “associated partners” representing the most varied areas relevant to IN.TUNE will now be networking the involved universities with stakeholders active in Europe’s cultural, academic, and social life. IN.TUNE is intended to play a key role in successfully meeting the special present and future challenges faced by institutions of higher music education as well as by the music and cultural sectors in general. In its collaborative development of strategies via which to prepare students for their future working situations in the arts and culture, the alliance is placing a special focus on social commitment, knowledge transfer, audio-visuality, and innovation in digitally supported formats of mobility and cooperation.
In eight working groups (also termed “work packages”), each led by one of the partner institutions, the structures for deeper collaboration are to be worked out according to the following principles:
- Policy-driven: the focus here is on the development of common frameworks and policies as a basis for joint programmes and projects.
- Developmental scope: starting with the area of music, IN.TUNE is to be expanded to include other artistic disciplines in a step-by-step manner.
- Broad representation: involvement and participation of the greatest possible number of university-attached individuals at all levels.
- Realistic approach: proceeding step-by-step should serve to guarantee that all can come along on this transformative journey.
IN.TUNE will play a highly significant role in the mdw’s strategic development as well as in consolidating its status as a leading institution.
