The fifth edition of what has now become Vienna’s largest competition for opera singers once again saw over 120 participants from all over the world gather at Schlosstheater Schönbrunn, with the competition’s individual rounds being judged by a distinguished jury including Cologne Opera director Birgit Meyer and Vienna State Opera director Dominique Meyer. The final round with orchestra was held on 12 November 2017 before a sold-out hall.
As always, it was an exciting evening with vocal achievements of the highest calibre. To be won were the main prizes awarded by the mdw, the Audience Prize sponsored by Hypo Vorarlberg, and further valuable prizes sponsored by organisations including Schloss Schönbrunn GmbH and Seefestspiele Mörbisch. The total value of all prizes this time around totalled € 22,000, and the evening’s live stream logged up to 8,000 views. The competition’s namesake, Kammersänger Otto Edelmann (who graduated from and later on became a professor at what was then the Academy of Music), would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year!
