One of the foremost professional goals of many Leonard Bernstein Department students is obtaining a full-time post in a renowned orchestra. In the interest of improving their chances of auditioning successfully, the Bernstein Department and the Rectorate agreed back in March 2019 to establish orchestral master classes. The idea was to afford ambitious students an additional opportunity to engage in personal exchange with colleagues from the respective orchestras before actually auditioning.

To mark 50 years of diplomatic relations between the People’s Republic of China and Austria, the mdw joined forces with the Wiener Konzerthaus and the Lang Lang Foundation to offer a public master class with piano superstar Lang Lang.

On 25 February, mdw conducting students participated in a master class on Beethoven’s 5th Symphony at the Vienna Konzerthaus given by Andrés Orozco-Estrada together with the Vienna Symphony.

The idea that teachers and students don’t need to be in the same room for lessons is not new.

The first instalment of the series featuring lectures, workshops, masterclasses, panel discussions and concerts took place in May of 2006.

Since October 2016, the full professor of piano chamber music has been leading the piano class at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Belgium together with the French-Canadian pianist Louis Lortie.
