
China Moses: Career Talk and Masterclass on Touring and Songwriting
Born in Los Angeles and raised in Paris, China Moses blends the cultural richness of both cities into her artistry. The daughter of jazz legend Dee Dee Bridgewater and Free Southern Theatre co-founder, director Gilbert Moses, she wrote and co-composed her debut single Time at the age of 16, accompanied by a video directed by Jean-Baptiste Mondino. Her first three albums in her 20's, for EMI imprint Source – China, On tourne en rond (Round we go), and Good Lovin' – showcased her early evolution as an artist.
After two successful straight ahead Jazz releases on Blue Note Records and Verve honouring the musical lives of Dinah Washington, Nina Simone, Mamie Smith, Ann Peebles and Donna Summer to name a few... in 2017, her album Nightintales (MPS Records/Made In China Productions) signaled a pivotal shift, as she began to define her own voice as a singer-songwriter at the crossroads of Soul and Jazz. The album took her around the globe. She has collaborated with the likes of DJ Mehdi, Karriem Riggins, Guru, Anthony Marshall, the Swedish label Breaking Bread, Meshell Ndegeocello and renowned sound engineer Bob Power. Her upcoming album, it's complicated…, set for release end of June 2025, features work with Troy Miller, Lakecia Benjamin, Daru Jones, Marvin Sewell, Theo Croker and Oli Rockberger.
A true global citizen, China has graced stages worldwide, performing at iconic venues such as London's Ronnie Scott's, Jazz Café, Barbican Centre and Royal Albert Hall, Paris' Olympia, UNESCO International Jazz Day (co-hosting and performing) and La Cigale, Vienna Konzerthaus, Berlin Opernhaus, Elbphilharmonie and Dresdner Philharmonie in Germany. She has also been featured at SF Jazz, San Jose Jazz, The Black Cat on the west coast of the United States and the Rose Theatre Jazz at Lincoln Center, Birdland and Nublu in New York City. With over 800 shows across six continents, she's made her mark as an unstoppable live performer.
Beyond the stage, China is a seasoned researcher, music maker, and broadcaster, with her own shows on TSF Jazz in France, Jazz FM in the UK, and East Village Radio in NYC. Her focus on authentic representation has earned her critical respect, and she continues to serve as an educator and mentor. China is an alumna of the 2013 Young Leaders French American Foundation program, holds the title of France's Chevalier of the Order of Merit, and has lent her expertise to organizations like the Montreux Jazz Academy, Britten Pears Arts, MIDEM, EFG London Jazz Festival, Katowice Music Academy, iMusic School, and HfMT Hamburg. She has also served on the committee of the Villa Albertine. In 2024 she accepted board membership at the historic 651 Arts in Brooklyn. She is also the co-founder and artistic director of the Tahiti Soul Jazz Festival and founder and artistic director of the Paris Soul Fest dedicated to the homegrown French soul scene.
