The Department of Early Music at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna aims to be the central place for historically informed performance practice for instrumentalists and singers within this university. The goal is to establish an internationally recognized, all-round institute that teaches an understanding of the aesthetics of Western music from around 1550 to 1850. Special attention is paid to Viennese and Austrian music, especially the music of the imperial court in the 17th century and the Viennese Classicism. Theoretical and practical background knowledge forms the basis upon which students can learn to approach the corresponding repertoire in an independent manner as artists.
