The theme of this evening is overcoming illness and crisis. In his 1st Piano Sonata, Scriabin dealt with his illness and the associated fear of no longer being able to play the piano. Rachmaninov composed the Cello Sonata op.19 as a thank you to the doctor Nikolai Dahl, who cured him of his depression. Mendelssohn's Piano Trio op. 66 was also written under the impression of illness and recovery, of the reawakening of nature and gratitude.
