Historical Lute Instruments (Supplementary subject)

André Ferreira is a Portuguese guitarist and lutenist based in Vienna. His artistic work is shaped by an ongoing dialogue between repertoire, instrument, and musical practice. Moving between modern and historical traditions, he is particularly interested in how the choice of instrument can influence the ways in which music is understood, performed, and heard. 

As a soloist, chamber musician, and continuo player, he works with a broad repertoire for guitar and historical plucked instruments. His work with lute and guitar across different periods combines an engagement with historical instruments and performance practice with a vibrant and contemporary approach to music. He collaborates with ensembles including Concentus Musicus Wien and Bach Consort Wien. 

His recent projects include the solo programme Musica Humana, featuring works by John Dowland, Alessandro Piccinini, and Giovanni Girolamo Kapsberger. He has also performed Schubert’s Winterreise at the Brucknerhaus Linz with Michael Schade and Christoph Hammer, as well as at the Wiener Konzerthaus Soirée with Julian Prégardien. His concert activities have taken him to major European venues, including the Musikverein Wien, Wiener Konzerthaus, Theater an der Wien, Kölner Philharmonie, Palau de la Música Catalana, and Auditorio Nacional de Música de Madrid. 

His musical training brings together the traditions of classical guitar and historical plucked instruments. He studied with Margarita Escarpa, Tilman Hoppstock, Paolo Pegoraro, Ricardo Gallén, and David Bergmüller, completing Master’s degrees in Guitar and Lute as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education. 

Teaching is an integral part of his musical work. Since 2023, he has taught guitar and lute at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. In his work with students, he connects his artistic practice with an ongoing process of reflection and development of his own musical approach.
