Haydn ad libitum

Today’s reverent attitude toward original notation, instrumentation, and performance practice would probably have been met with an incredulous shake of the head in the eighteenth century. This performance acknowledges and brings to life that era’s casual approach to authenticity. Particular attention will be paid to arrangements done during the age of Empress Maria Theresia.

Schubert 1817

The year 1817 saw Franz Schubert compose some of his most famous songs, including “Der Tod und das Mädchen” [Death and the Maiden], “Ganymed” [Ganymede], and “Die Forelle” [The Trout].

Students of the mdw will present these and other settings of poems by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Johann Mayrhofer, and Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart. Readings of texts and excerpts of documents from 1817 round out this look back at a special year.
